Norwegian Petroleum Directorate announces dry well southeast of the Varg field in the North Sea - 16/10-5

Friday, Nov 16, 2012

Talisman Energy Norge AS, operator of production licence 568, has completed drilling of wildcat well 16/10-5. The well is dry.

The well was drilled about 17 kilometres southeast of the Varg field in the central North Sea.

The objective of the well was to prove petroleum in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Ula formation). It encountered a 94-metre reservoir in the Ula formation which, as expected, had very good reservoir quality.

Data acquisition and sampling have been carried out. The well is the first exploration well in production licence 568. The licence was awarded in APA 2010.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2990 metres below the sea surface and was terminated in the Bryne formation in the Middle Jurassic. Water depth is 83 metres. The well has been permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 16/10-5 was drilled by the Maersk Giant drilling facility, which is now headed for production licence 147 in the southern North Sea to drill exploration well 3/7-8 S for DONG E&P Norge AS.
